Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Never had what I'd call a proper back problem but last 6 months I've been getting lower back ache which is from sitting a desk for the last 10 years.

As Dan M said, chiropractor is helping me massively. Wen't before work today as it goes and feel really good.

I'm reaching a point where it feels more comfortable to sit with good posture rather than slouching.

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Sounds to me like Sciatica brought on by a collapsing disk in the lower back. The disks are a gristle like substance that is filled with a thick liquid, located between each vertebrae in the back. Bending and loading the spine when not entirely fit can put too much pressure on the disk.

The disk punctures under pressure and the liquid oozes out and touches the sciatic nerve that runs down the spinal column and out through each leg. That is probably the sharp pain you feel and there is no cure as such but you can avoid further problems by resting so that the disk can seal itself.

I had these problems when I was around 30 after I kept playing football with a niggling back pain. I ended up not being able to move for months as I developed severe sciatica.

After that my back and with proper stretching exercises it was good enough to play football at a lower level until I reached my late 40's. I have since had to have an op to correct the arthritis growing inside my spinal column and closing down the spinal chord but fine now and ready for pre-season....

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Have had lower back spasms on and off since 1998 when i hit a shit 7 iron into the water followed almost immediately into the water by said 7 iron!!!.. ripped lower back and niggle is always there...need to do stretches in the morning but sometimes it will go over the most innocuous movement and i'm literally laid up for a week with spasms!!..pain is ridiculous!!

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Once everything's pain free, look into starting core stability exercises. A lot of apparently random muscle strain can be caused by non-core muscles over-compensating for a lack of stability.

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Yeah had this about 15 year's ago. First time was crippling; Doctor gave me anti-imflamatory/Ibroprohen. Lie flat on back on a hard matress. After a couiple of days it went. Now it comes back occasionally but it hasn't happened to me for a few years now. Each time its milder and takes less time to recover.

I excercise regulary in the gym for the last 10 years and maybe that helped.

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
As much as I don't buy in to alternative therapies in general, chiropractic turned me back into a functioning member of society after chronic back and shoulder pain following a motorcycle accident. Physio did nothing for me. However unless you can find a friendly doctor to refer you AND you have private cover (I did), then it will cost.

Different strokes etc.

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Best thing as already suggested is to keep mobile.
Keep hydrated as well, that's water not booze.
Anti- Inflammatories will help.
Keep stretching as well if you can.
Sounds like you might have done a disc, book to see your doctor, if he's good he'll send you for X-Rays etc
If he's shit he'll just say take painkillers etc and go see a physio/Osteopath.
Where abouts are you?
The bloke who does mine is mustard, when i was laid up for 6 months a few years ago he was the only one that could fix me, he's based in ESSEX but he comes to Gravesend every Friday, i see him rarely now as i try hard to actually maintain my back.
I can WHOmail his number.
He does acupuncture though as well so if you're cool with that?

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
I think the problem is Jonesy backs are very difficult to assess/diagnose. Also, different treatments work for different people.

Some people on here have slagged osteopaths but if you google NHS advice on osteopaths they clearly state there is evidence that treatment by an osteopath can help with lower back pain... but then it won't for everyone.

I went down the GP>Physio route and the physio was shit and it did nothing for me, possibly their exercises made it a little worse.

I eventually went to an osteopath that was personally recommended to me and he was superb. It took a long time but mainly just the advice he gave me on managing the condition and exercises that worked for me were really effective.

As someone else said though, once it's done once it's sadly likely to go again. You need to do stretching exercises regularly or it will come back.

I haven't done mine lately and am now worried!

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Keeping it moving is good advice, don't start thinking a few days off work laying on the sofa will do it any good.

One important thing is to keep your back moving, If you can bear it; swimming really helped me but do find out what it is wrong first.

I pinched a nerve playing football once, couldn't stand up straight after it stiffened up.

Went to Basildon Hospital, they gave me some anti inflammatories, the pain went the same day.

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Chiropractors are completely unregulated/unqualified con artists

Osteopaths are only slightly better

Dr and Physio is your route

Re: BAD BACK PAIN!
Don't worry Ted will be along soon to help with this but in the mean time...hot water bottle 10mins then ice pack 10mins and try and keep mobile.
